COMMENTS:

Worked at Thiokol / Morton Thiokol from 1979 to 1986. I worked on many programs including being part of the Booster assembly and test crew. I also worked on the Elkton Star 48 motor doing vibration testing as well as propellant batch sample testing for the booster program. Our crew did some handling and testing of the carbon fiber wound booster motor segments but never test fired any. I have the distinction of being one of a handful of people that has walked the entire length of loaded booster motors on the inside from the nozzle to the igniter. We would do this as part of the final inspection sequence for test firing, prior to installing the plug. Our crew worked at testing all of the Thiokol products but we took exceptional pride in being part of the SRB assembly and firing crew. On the day of my interview at the plant I was sitting at the guard gate awaiting escort into my meeting when the 747 with the Enterprise on top flew over our heads at a very low altitude, three times. It was on its final trip back East. I knew then and there I really wanted that job.
