COMMENTS:

Jim Huntsinger was responsible for the Space Shuttle Main Engine engine system and power balance analysis.  The power balance – essentially a detailed accounting of all engine parameters – includes the specifications and operating characteristics of all engine components.  The SSME is a closed cycle engine so precise calculation of generated turbine power and required power at all conditions is necessary.  Pressures, temperatures and other thermochemical conditions of all fluids at all points within the engine schematic must be determined exactly.  Pressure drops, heat transfer and all combustion and expansion nozzle losses must be accurately accounted for at all points.  The excellence of Jim’s work was demonstrated by the successful flight record and the continued use of the engine for new applications like the SLS and the Phantom Express (as the AR22).  Jim went on the contribute to other projects at General Atomics.
