Payloads rock!

NASA Co-operative Intern from August 1986 to May 1988 for Level IV testing. This work ranged from performing console test of the ASTRO-1 Spacelab, to developing supporting database software, troubleshooting PC issues, and schlepping the engineers’ computer equipment up and down non-airconditioned stairwells.

Once graduated, became full-time engineer in 1989 for the Operations and Maintenance branch of Payloads. But I still had to schlep my own equipment. Was responsible for the Sys Admin and development of the HP3070 Bed-of-Nails custom circuit card tester located in the M7-505 building. Designed the translation software to automate the test fixture creation process utilizing an automated milling machine and (mostly) automated wirewrap machine. Btw, never try to tear open a bag of razors.

Became Operations Lead for the initial instantiation of the Test Control and Monitor System, that was to be used to test International Space Station equipment. Many document reviews and meetings held; schedules and budgets were created and recreated. When the B1 set was delivered by the contracted developer, there were bugs to be worked out. Getting the system to boot up required some voodoo and the Hokey Pokey.

During this time, was recruited by NASA Public Affairs to perform bus tours for NASA VIP guests from 1993 to 1997. Once, I was told Irlene Mandrell was on my bus, but she was incognito, and I didn’t recognize her.

In February 1997, NASA needed to reduce its workforce and offered a Buyout, which I accepted, in order to become a stay-at-home Mom.

My Space Program colleagues were amazing to work with, and I have such fond memories of the out-of-this-world experience!  “That’s what it’s all about.”
