COMMENTS:
Rex began his career with NASA in February of 1966 as a Computer Systems Analyst in the Automatic Data Management Branch at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC). In 1968, Rex received his first commendation for his outstanding performance in the generation of the operating system for the IBM 360 computer, which was completed in half of the estimated time and with no issues. In 1972, Rex was promoted to supervisor of the Administrative Systems Section in the Systems Software Branch of the Computer Systems Division at KSC.
By 1975, the Central Data Subsystem (CDS) of the ground Launch Processing System (LPS) was in the design phase for the Space Shuttle Program. Rex was assigned to be a consultant for the Source Evaluation Board for CDS. In 1977, in preparation for the delivery and installation of hardware and software for LPS, the Director of Technical Support Directorate established the Central Data System (CDS) Project office and Rex was detailed to the Checkout Control and Monitor Subsystem (CCMS) Operations and Maintenance (O&M) group. By 1980, the CCMS Branch was formally established in the Launch Processing Division of the Information Systems Directorate. In 1981, Rex was recognized with a Superior Achievement Award for superior achievement and leadership in the coordination and implementation of an operational transition and integrity control plan for sustaining Engineering of the LPS CCMS.
Following reorganizations within the Launch Processing System Division, Rex was promoted to the Chief of the LPS Software Engineering Section in 1985. In 1991, Rex was promoted to Chief of the LPS Software Engineering Branch.
Rex retired from NASA, after 30 years at KSC and after 40 years as a federal employee, in January of 1996.
