COMMENTS:

Timothy (Tim) Pirlo is the Institutional Training Lead in the Human Resources Directorate, Workforce Strategy and Development Division. In this role, he has overall program management for all institutional training at Kennedy Space Center (KSC), which includes safety, health and environmental (SH&E) training and oversight for all technical workforce development training for NASA civil servants at the Center. In addition, he serves as the Applied Program/Project Engineering & Leadership (APPEL) point of contact (POC) for KSC.

Pirlo began his career with NASA in 2007 as an HR Specialist, HRD and served as the Technical Monitor Representative (TMR) for the NASA KSC Institutional Support Services (KISS) Contract and its corresponding Training Task Order. Prior to coming on board with NASA, Pirlo worked as the Training Manager for InDyne, Inc. in support of the Joint Base Operations & Support Contract (JBOSC) at KSC and previously served in varying training roles for EG&G Florida in support of the Base Operations Contract (BOC) at KSC. Pirlo has more than 25 years of training and development experience and institutional knowledge at the Center.

Pirlo has received several NASA achievement awards throughout his career and received the NASA Exceptional Bravery Medal in 2013. He is currently participating in the Leading and Influencing Others in NASA (LION) Cohort 2 program and is a graduate of Leadership Brevard in 2012 and he completed the Leadership Through Influence (LTI) program in 2011.

Pirlo earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Education in 1983 and a Masters of Education degree in Technical Education from the University of Central Florida in Orlando in 1992. Pirlo retired as a Major from the U.S. Army in 2006 after more than 20 years of service in the Army Reserves, including a one-year active duty deployment to Kuwait in 2003 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). As a Florida certified educator, Mr. Pirlo has also worked for over 15 years as a part-time adult high school teacher with Brevard Public Schools conducting social studies, GED, and adult-basic education courses.​

As a retired U.S. Army Reserve officer, Pirlo received extensive training and experience over the course of  his military career to hone his abilities to effectively lead.  

Pirlo, who resides in Viera, is married and has two children – one daughter who is a nurse at the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center at Lake Nona in Orlando, Florida and a son who is in his sophomore year at University of Central Florida (UCF) in Orlando studying advertising and public relations.

Pirlo is actively involved in his church, Suntree United Methodist Church (SUMC), and he is currently teaching a confirmation course to middle school students and regularly participates in other youth program activities at SUMC.

Technical Training Manager – Safety, Health and Training Directorate

  • Manages Safety Training Branch consisting of 8 personnel (5 instructors – 2 administrative employees) with an annual operating budget in excess of 700k.
  • Responsible for implementing Safety Training Program for ~3000 contractor employees, ~2000 NASA employees and 1500 USAF personnel at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station and Patrick AFB.
  • Administers employee training certification program consisting of 100 certifications and associated On-the-Job Training (OJT) packages for job tasks and equipment operations.
  • Manages instructional program consisting of over 150 courses conducted monthly with more than 2500 personnel attending.
  • Creates and utilize metrics that identify program effectiveness, results and ROI.
  • Performs systematic compliance evaluations, including inspections of facilities and coordinate resolution of any identified issues with site management and engineering personnel.
  • Received NASA Group Achievement Award for Shuttle Processing Foreign Object/Debris Damage Program Enhancement Team.
  • Oversees automated web-based scheduling application and training catalogue and on-line training courses.

  • Supervised safety training program for all required OSHA, EPA and NASA compliance training for base operations personnel at Kennedy Space Center.
  • Designed and developed instructional materials for delivery via e-Learning and instructor-led classroom training programs.
  • Established cross-training program for instructors to complement evolving mission requirements.

HRD Administrator – Human Resources Development

  • Served as the primary learning and organizational development representative for company.
  • Assisted in the creation of executive development programs, knowledge management strategies, and collaborated with department leaders in support of corporate strategic planning.
  • Responsible for administration of educational tuition assistance program promoting employee development and trained departmental staff on EEOC and other HR compliance Issues.
